Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service unveiled its new state-of-the-art tactical training facility in Desertcreat outside Cookstown.

The special building is the first of its kind in the region and cost 4.8 million pounds.

The new facility is six stories high and contains 30 compartments.

The structure will allow firefighters to train in real-life operational scenarios, which will help them be better equipped for the difficult real life emergencies.

Using real fires, as well as welfare and classroom facilities staff will be better trained and prepared to do their job.

Michael Graham Chief Fire and Rescue Officer said: “After years of planning and preparation we are delighted to officially open our new Tactical Firefighting Facility. "This new facility is the first element delivered as part of our larger learning and Development Centre project that will meet the long-term training needs of the NIFRS."

He added: “This is a real game changer for NIFRS in how we train our people as it enables us to develop multiple realistic operational scenarios using real fires simulating’ real life’ fire situations.

Richard Pengelly, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health, said:

"“This new, modern, fit for purpose building and facilities will provide a much improved learning environment for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service for many years to come.

“This centre is an indicator of how a joined-up approach from government departments and Arm’s Length Bodies working together can deliver for all of our community.
