Review Ever since Joe Wicks launched his "Lean In 15" books, I've had a love hate relationship with them. I've always found his recipes to be deliciously healthy. But, I've always struggled with the breakfast options, and the price of a weekly food shop. The first book I bought was the second dark blue book, "Lean in 15 The Shape plan". I set out to plan my meals accordingly and to stick religiously to his plan and philosophy. The food tasted amazing and his meals did make a difference to my skin and energy levels. Joe's ethos is about wanting more energy and tailoring your diet and exercise plan to that principle. I have to say he was right! After I adopted his philosophy I found myself having more energy, I felt great mentally and my skin was clear and fresh. When I was being consistent with my diet and training, I started to notice my body becoming more slim and defined. Other people even noticed it, which made me feel great! However, I did find that my weekly shopping was extortionate! I started using Joe's books when I was in my final year of university. I was trying to orcistrate a well balanced lifestyle with university, part-time work, socialising and exercising. Joe's book was great as it allowed me to have a well balanced diet, without even realising it. I just had to plan my breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. By following his book I was getting all my major food groups without realising it. It did however put a strain on me financially. Anyone who I've ever talked to about healthy eating, all came back with the same resounding response, "eating well is expensive". Using fresh and organic food is always going to be more expensive, because you pay for what you buy. If you want good proper organic food, you are going to have to spend that little bit more. As a student and now a young professional, it's hard having to splurge on a sixty pound shopping bill every week. In addition to the price, I found Joe's books lacking quick, easy, on the go recipes for breakfast. His breakfast options are delicious and full of flavour, but they aren't convient. If you're in a rush and need to dash out the door in the morning, it's not practical. I am not, and never have been, the type of person who will get up early to spend 15-20 minutes making breakfast. I'm just not! I would rather have the extra 15-20 minutes in bed. For those people out there like me, (and I know there are a lot of you!) it's just not convient, period! I do love his overnight oats and his smoothies are nice and easy, and you can make them the night before.
Joe's new book has the same reader friendly flow. Starting with a quick introduction, his 12 top tips to success and some simple work outs to follow at the back. This time round, The Fat-Loss Plan was giving me a very oriental vibe, with a lot of his post work out meals including prawn and different types of noodles or rice. His meals are packed with flavour and are great if you need some inspiration in how to add variety to your cooking. The instructions like always, are very easy to follow, and are dummy proof. If you want your partner to cook more, I recommend you buy him/ her this book. If they can't follow Joe's recipes, then they're a lost cause, and that's saying something. The new book, I'm afraid is much the same. The quick, make it the night before options are limited, or the breakfasts options are time consuming. His breakfast recipes in "The Fat-Loss Plan" include: scrambled eggs, poached eggs, frittata and omelette. Which you could make the night before and heat in the morning. I have tried it and I must admit it is not appealing. In saying that, I did see on Instagram that Joe was cooking up a storm with Jamie Oliver, giving his new "5 Ingredients" book a try. Hopefully this is something that Joe is looking into, where you can have fewer ingredients that cost less, but still make great delicious meals.
